UCD STUDENTS' UNION LAUNCH CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE RENT A ROOM SCHEME
GOT A SPARE ROOM? EARN UP TO €14,000 TAX FREE
Today, UCD Students' Union launched a campaign to promote the 'Rent A Room Scheme' whereby private homeowners can rent a room (or two!) in their house and earn up to €14,000 per year tax free.
Katie O'Dea, Campaigns and Engagement Officer, UCD Students' Union said;
'UCD is in the highest rent pressure zone in the country which means students have less opportunities to afford private rental accommodation. Renting a room from a homeowner or 'digs' is the most affordable option in this area but we still do not have enough beds for all of our students.
We are receiving high numbers of students reporting to us that they cannot find a bed in commutable distance of UCD. We are encouraging any homeowner who has a spare room in their house to consider renting it to students. Students urgently need a place to stay and homeowners can receive up to €14,000 tax free income if they rent out a spare room (or two!) in their house. It really is a win win situation.
We are also asking homeowners to keep in mind that students will need access to cooking and laundry facilities as these can often be off limits to students in digs and this causes a lot of stress for them.
We will be flyering in main centres nearby UCD at weekends and dropping leaflets into homes along the 46a, 145 and 39a bus routes in the coming weeks to promote the scheme to homeowners and hopefully we will create more beds for students who are still struggling.
